Bogart is an 8 month old English Bulldog who was diagnosed with demodectic mange at 4 months of age. Demodex is a type of mite that lives in the hair follicles of dogs. It is not contagious to other dogs and if present in low numbers it doesn't cause problems. However, in young dogs if something happens to upset the natural balance or supress the dog's immune system the mites can proliferate and cause serious skin disease. In Bogart's case he was suffering from generalized demodectic mange as the mites were affecting all areas of the skin. The treatement for demodex can be prolonged and involve medication to kill the mites and also treat the secondary skin infections that occur. Bogart is responding to the treatment and it is hoped with the dedication of his owners and the maturity of his own immune system he will eventually be mite free!
