Introducing Our New In-House Lab

We have recently purchased a new in-house lab for running our blood work. We strive to get the best and most accurate results we can. The new lab equipment provides us with fast, same day results for tests such as pre-anesthetic screens before surgery, NSAID panels for animals on arthritis medication, thyroud testing withe the in house T4 test, diagnostic panels for sick animnals, and the list of possibilities goes on and on.

New Tonometer at West Kootenay Animal Hospital

We are very excited about the recently purchase of a new tonometer. This specialized piece of equipment is used to measure the intraocular pressure (inside the eye) of pets to help diagnosis and monitor conditions like glaucoma and uveitis.  Our new tonometer is much more pet friendly and employs the latest technology.  It is a less stressful and more accurate way to check eye pressure in cats and dogs.

Health Canada Advisory on Flea and Tick Control Products

Current data from Health Canada's Pesticide Incident Reporting Program suggests there may be a potential for adverse reactions in cats and dogs from the use of flea and tick control products applied to the skin and sold in stores as pesticides. These products can be identified by a Pest Control Product or PCP Registration Number on the label.

Travelling to the United States with Medical/Royal Canin Veterinary Diets

Effective December 2008, pet owners are permitted to take their Medical/Royal Canin Veterinary diets to the U.S. providing that the product does not contain lamb, sheep or goat (Canine Gastro dry food would be the only restricted diet), and it is in the original packaging.  Please refer to www.cbp.gov for additional information.

New Topical Dewormer for Cats

Profender from the Bayer compay had developed a new dewormer for cats.  It is applied topically to cats over 8 weeks of age on the skin of the neck.  It is an effective treatment for tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms in cats.  If pilling your cat leaves you frustrated and injured this may be a great solution!  Talk to us about using Profender to protect your cat from internal parasites.  Check out the product information at www.animalhealth.bayer.ca/profender/

Pet Dental Health Month

February is National Pet Dental Health Month.  At West Kootenay Animal Hospital we believe the dental health of our patients is a year round concern.  The doctors preform an oral exam at every annual exam to assess the health of your pets teeth and gums.  The American Veterinary Dental Society estimates that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3!  Dental disease can have major impacts on the overall health and comfort of your pet and regular dental care is just as important as good nutrition, regular check ups and exercise for your pet.  Ch

New Surgical Monitor at WKAH

In January we recieved our new multiparameter surgical monitor.  The new monitor allows us to monitor a number of parameters and trends during anesthesia and alert us to patient problems quickly.  The new monitor measures patient blood pressure, heart rate, ECG, respiratory rate, blood oxygen levels, expired CO2 levels and capnography.  Anesthesia safety has always been a top priority for our patients and our new monitor is another tool that helps us achieve this goal and provide the highest standard of care to our patients.
